8 Ways To Be Frugal During a Move‏

Moving can be expensive. It doesn’t matter if you’re moving across town or from one side of the country to the other, the process always costs a lot more than most would like to spend. Hiring inexpensive movers is not the only way to save yourself money.

Unpakt, a new, instant pricing application to help consumers find reputable moving companies and book their moves online, shares 8 Easy Ways to Be Frugal During a Move:

  • Compare Moving Companies: Cheap is not always better. Sometimes companies will attract you with a low price, but hidden in the print are a lot of other fees. When you are comparing companies and rates, make sure that you know what you are getting in each quote, so it is a fair comparison.
  • Collect Free Boxes: You should never have to actually pay for a moving box, unless you specifically need a wardrobe one or an extra-large one for an awkward item. There is a long list of places that will be more than happy for you to come take boxes off their hands. Check at the grocery, office supply, liquor and book store as well as restaurants and bars.
  • Don’t Pay for Packing Supplies: You can pick up old newspapers for free at just about any gas station or liquor store. Plus, you don’t need to buy bubble wrap or other costly supplies when you have towels, t-shirts, linens, sweaters, etc. You have a lot of things around the house you can use to pack valuables.
  • Pack Thoughtfully: Extra boxes are often used simply because items are packed poorly. Think of nesting dolls when you pack. A lot of little items can be packed inside larger ones. Not only does this help keep items secure, it reduces the number of boxes you use, which means that there are fewer boxes to carry.
  • Clean for Your Deposit: A lot of people do not take the time to clean their old apartment or rental house, so they don’t get their full deposit back. It will cost you a lot less to rent a quality carpet cleaner and do it yourself than it will if your landlord has to hire a professional to do it.
  • Move During the Week: On average, most moving companies charge an average of 20 to 25 percent more on weekends. Most people are off work on the weekends so movers are often overbooked. If you move during the week, you will typically save yourself a little money.
  • Have a Good Purge: How much stuff do you have that you don’t really need? Why bother packing this stuff? You can sell, donate or trash it. Seriously, a lot of movers charge by weight; do you really need to pay for these items to be moved, if you are not using them?
  • Go Grocery Shopping Immediately: The sooner you can at least go buy a few essentials, the better off you will be. If you need to order pizza or go grab takeout for a few meals, it will get pretty expensive. Sure, get pizza the first day; it is part of the fun of moving. After all, whether you hire one of the expensive or cheap moving companies, there is always money for pizza! However, meals after this one should come from your own refrigerator, if you want to save yourself some money.

I Am Moving!

After months of searching for the right home we have finally found a place… the catch? After viewing it this past Saturday, getting approved on Monday, and signing the papers yesterday we are moving THIS SATURDAY! So much to do in such a short period of time means that I have to take a “break” here at the blog for the rest of this week and next week. A few posts may pop up here and there since I already have some scheduled but I will not be updating regularly. Don’t worry though, when I come back I will have more awesome gift ideas to share, more giveaways, and many cute pictures of my children (and our new home)!

What tips do you have for making the moving process easier? I would appreciate any tips you can give me! :)

Here are some specific questions I have:

1) Where do you start?

2) How do you unpack with two toddlers?

3) How long did it take you to unpack everything?

A new year… new goals

Ok so I haven’t posted anything in months… since March to be exact. Wow a lot has happened since then… Just some short updates- I had my second child, lost my (step)mom, my family moved in with my father and little sister, and I went back to work full time.

My second child is a little boy, Lucas, and he turned six months old on Christmas day. Amazing how fast the time flies! He is absolutely adorable and Jacob is a great big brother. Jacob is 18 months now and growing smarter everyday. I am in awe of these boys.

My mom passed away in June overnight. It was extremely hard for me. One day I was over at her house spending the day with her and then early the next morning I find out she had passed away the night before (probably due to a seizure- she had epilepsy). The worst part was that Jake was in the room when she passed and I just pray he doesn’t remember any of it. The best part- I know my mom is in Heaven and during the wake and funeral we found out just how many lives she had touched.

In August, the boys, Sinisa, and I moved in with my dad and sister. It’s been such a blessing to us and I believe to my father and sister as well. It’s hard after living by myself for so long but it is best for our family right now.

In November, I returned back to work full time. This had never been my intention as I had always planned to be a stay at home mom. To my surprise I love working and I love my job. I promote my dad’s company through social media mainly and it is an awesome job. Seriously, I spend most of my day on twitter, facebook, linked in, blogs, etc. The best part is that I get to come home and have lunch with my boys everyday and if I need time off it’s no problem.

Ok, so enough excuses of where I have been these past months… I am back and more excited than ever to start blogging again :) Starting in the New Year expect to see new posts 3-5 times a week. I will include updates on my goals, insights into my life, and am looking forward to doing a lot of linkups with daily themes. This is going to be awesome and I hope you will join me as I journey through motherhood and not only strive to be a great mother, but a great woman as well :)
