How To Make Bathroom Recycling Easy

Many families recycle bottles, cans and paper products in the kitchen but it’s harder to do throughout the rest of the house. One place we use a lot of plastic bottles is in the bathroom and they tend to end up in the trashcan along with other things that can be reused, like toilet paper rolls. Turns out we aren’t alone. A 2016 consumer survey on in-home recycling habits, conducted in partnership with Johnson & Johnson Consumer Inc., shows that one-third of regular recyclers admit that it never even occurred to them to recycle in the bathroom and only one in five recyclers have a recycling bin in their bathroom.

I wanted to make bathroom recycling much easier for our family so I decorated a small trash can for the boy’s bathroom that we could put all the empty bottles and other items in until we needed them for other things around the house. I explained to my boys the importance of recycling and shared with them what types of things we could recycle in the bathroom which is everything from shampoo and mouthwash bottles to soap and bandage boxes.

To make the recycling can I used a 3 gallon garbage can and attached stickers that said “recycle”. (Note: I suggest putting a layer of mod-podge over the stickers to handle the moisture.) You could also have the kids write and color on the can. I was going to do this but the boys bathroom is also the bathroom that guests use so I decided against it because I wanted the recycling bin to blend in with the bathroom decor.

Not sure how to reuse empty toiletry bottles? Here are some of my favorite ways:

  • Create ISpy bottles for kids- fill the bottle with rice and small items and secure the lid with strong tape
  • Storage for small craft items like sequins and pom poms
  • Bath tub or water table dumping containers
  • Storage for tiny toys like Shopkins
  • Split large paint jugs into smaller empty toiletry bottles for easy access and use

For extra fun, when a bottle is close to being empty I add some washable kid’s paint in it and I mix it up. Then I let the kids paint a clear art mat in the bathtub. It’s easy to clean up because it’s mixed with the soap and it’s already in the tub so the mess is contained.

If the bin gets too full we can always recycle the items in it but our family tends to reuse things as many times as possible. I think it’s the preschool teacher in me that wants to find new ways to use everything before I get rid of it (see my recent post on 100 kids crafts that reuse household materials for proof).

Want to learn more about recycling personal care products used in your bathroom? Check out the Johnson & Johnson Consumer Inc. Care To Recycle® website. Care To Recycle®, a program of Johnson & Johnson Consumer Inc., provides creative new ways for parents to reimagine their recycling habits beyond the kitchen and into the bathroom, while engaging their children. The Care To Recycle® program aims to raise awareness of the importance of recycling personal care products in the bathroom, including preventing valuable materials from entering landfills unnecessarily. Together, we can help create a healthy planet for our kids today, and for future generations.

Everything We Need For An Active Summer

Disclosure: I received LISTERINE® Brand products and a Walgreens gift card from Johnson & Johnson Healthcare Products Division of McNEIL-PPC, Inc. and The Motherhood as part of my participation in the LISTERINE® Brand Totally Taken Care Of program. All thoughts and opinions expressed in this post are my own.

Summertime is a very busy time of the year and we love to cram it full of fun activities. Since we have four unique people in our home we try to do things that everyone wants to do. I enjoy grilling out and relaxing in the backyard, Alicia likes exploring our community and trips to the beach, Jacob likes playing sports and Lucas likes trying to visit every playground that he can. Since we are all so unique we need products that are going to meet our unique health needs as well. One brand that understands that best is LISTERINE® because they offer a wide range of products for a busy family.

As a parent I always encourage my boys to have excellent mouth care habits and we like LISTERINE® TOTAL CARE because it is a complete mouthwash that offers six unique benefits in one bottle. LISTERINE® TOTAL CARE helps prevent cavities and restores enamel, strengthens teeth and freshens breath while killing bad breath germs and completely cleans the whole mouth. LISTERINE® TOTAL CARE ensures completely that my family’s oral care needs are taken care of 100%.

My new favorite is LISTERINE® TOTAL CARE ZERO. All the same six in one bottle benefits but without any alcohol. It’s my last step in my morning routine and easy to swish and go.

The boys have their own favorite flavor too. It is LISTERINE® SMART RINSE®. It is a post brush rinse specifically designed for children between 6 and 12 years of age. Kids are protected up to 12 hours due to the added benefit of fluoride.

Using Listerine gets my whole family and I energized and ready for whatever each summer day will bring whether we are chilling at home or on the go. For everything else there is Johnson & Johnson brand products. We always have some of these with us at all times, including Neutrogena Cool Dry sunscreen spray, Neosporine and Band-Aid Brand Adhesive bandages.

My boys just love running around all day, whether they are playing sports or playing on the slip-n-slide in the backyard. All of these products are must haves!

As our summer will be fun and hectic it is always good to know that in emergency we can always stock up on Johnson & Johnson brand products at our local Walgreen’s. Walgreen’s will make sure the fun never runs out.

New School Year For Kids Means New Beauty Regimen For Mom

The new school year always brings as much promise for me as the New Year does. It’s a time to start new traditions and new routines. While that means new classes and activities for the boys, it means a new beauty regimen for me this year. Thanks to Johnson & Johnson for sponsoring this post and sending me products to remind me that I need to start taking care of myself better!

Many of you know that I work from home. It’s great and such a huge blessing but I must confess that I often get lazy having that luxury. I usually spend my whole day in yoga pants and t-shirts with no makeup on and my hair up in a messy bun. I hide behind my Avatar on Google hangout meetings with co-workers because I feel self-conscious. The casual look carries over into the evenings as I run to sports practices. (To be honest, the only times I look semi-decent are when I’m going to school events, Church or blogging events.)

I’m slowly trying to get out of that rut now that the kids are back in school. While I will probably still keep the comfy clothes most days, I will work on being more presentable in them. To start off, I will wash my face of the night-time grime. One product that I love and have used before is Aveeno Skin Brightening Daily Scrub.

I like that this product exfoliates but is still very gentle on my sensitive skin. I follow this up with Aveeno’s Eczema Therapy Moisturizing Cream on my dry patches of skin. I’ll go beyond toothbrushing with some Listerine Mouth Wash and comb my hair into a cuter looking ponytail. After I’ve taken care of my skin, mouth and hair I’m going to start putting on basic makeup. A BB cream will even out my skin, and then I’ll finish off with a little color- some lip gloss, a swipe of mascara and a bit of blush.

Will I look fancy? No. Will I look a little more presentable? Yes! This will help me not scare the UPS driver and the bus drivers and may just make me feel more confident throughout the day. At the very least, I will feel a bit more desirable when Sinisa comes home from work ;)

The Promises We Make To Our Children

(Disclosure: This is a sponsored post but all thoughts are my own.)

When I first became a mom I remember looking down at my son and instantly falling in love with the little swaddled child in my arms. Even though we had just met, I made many promises to him. Among those were the promise that I’d love him forever and that I’d be the very best mom I could be.

These desires didn’t end when we left the hospital, but have only grown stronger over the years. Every time I look at my child I find myself thinking that I couldn’t possibly love him more and then the next day comes and I realize I love him more than I did the day before and even more than the day before that one. Every hour I grow more in love and with that comes the strong maternal desire to keep him safe. One way I keep my children safe is by trying to always make the best decisions with them in mind. I love when I discover that companies have the same values that I do and one of those companies is Johnson & Johnson.

Moms make promises to their babies all the time and J&J listened to moms and made one too! They recently changed the formula of their baby care products because parents shared their concerns and they wanted to give parents peace of mind when using the products on their little ones.

What promises do you make to your children?
