Water Park Fun For Little Ones At Grizzly Jack’s Grand Bear Resort

Thanks to Grizzly Jack’s for hosting my family for a weekend stay and for making my Mother’s Day special. All thoughts are my own.

grizzly jack's

A couple weekends ago my mom and I took my three kids to Utica, Illinois for a memorable Mother’s Day weekend celebration at Grizzly Jack’s Grand Bear Resort. Grizzly Jack’s is full of fun for families with young children and the perfect place to stay after a day of exploring Starved Rock, a nearby popular outdoor tourist destination. The resort has an indoor water park, miniature golf, an arcade, an ice cream shop, and a playground on the property.

Grizzly Jack's Grand Resort Family Suite

We stayed in a family suite with a balcony and I loved the lodge feel that the room, and really the whole resort, has. The room sleeps six with two queen sized beds and a sleeper sofa. I felt the room was very clean and also spacious which was great since it was my first time traveling with a baby and I brought way more than I needed for a two-day stay. I loved that the room had a refrigerator we could put soda in and a microwave for making popcorn.

Grizzly Jacks Villa

Need a room that fits more than six people? Grizzly Jack’s has a variety of options for larger families and groups including Vacation Villas that sleep up to 9 and Luxury Cabins that sleep up to 18. I think it would be fun to stay in one of the cabins with a group of other families!

kids at water park

Now let’s get to the most important part of any resort (at least in my tweens’ eyes)….the water park! Grand Bear Falls is the resort’s 24,000 square foot indoor waterpark with play zones, slides, wave pool, lazy river, kiddie pool, and hot tub. The water park itself was just remodeled this year.

nana with kids at water park

While the water park is smaller than many we’ve visited in the past, I actually think it’s the perfect size for families with little ones. I liked that it wasn’t too spread out since I like to give my older kids independence but still like to be able to keep my eye on them in the water, especially while they are in the wave pool. Since it wasn’t very crowded I could easily play with my 4 month old in the shallow end of the pool while watching my older boys in the “deep” end jumping around in the waves. I also appreciated that the boys could stand in the deeper end of the pool which they typically can’t do.

lazy river

My family also enjoyed the water park’s lazy river. My boys loved chasing each other around it while my mom and Emma floated around. The lazy river also had a “cyclone” like area that was pretty unique and kids seemed to enjoy swirling around in. There were also water slides the kids went on a few times. One thing they didn’t do for the first time ever? Play in the “kiddie” area called the Ranger Station. Guess they have finally outgrown that part of water parks which kind of makes me sad but I’ll have another one who will love that portion of water parks in just another year or two!

emma at the water park

One thing that should be noted about the water park is that parents really need to be diligent about watching their children since I felt like the number of lifeguards was pretty low. We went off season while it was slower so maybe that is why, or maybe I’m just used to larger water parks with more lifeguards working, but just wanted you all to be aware. Other than that I thought the water park was nicely remodeled and we loved playing there.

emma in the water

Another thing I appreciated about the resort was that Jack’s Place, the on-site restaurant, delivered to the water park area so we had barbecue chicken bacon pizza delivered to us to eat while we were taking a swim break. There is also a snack shop adjacent to the water park where people can grab snacks and drinks. I felt like they had a decent amount of tables and chairs as well which was nice because I feel like some other water parks we’ve been to do not have enough seating for everyone so we are usually stuck sharing chairs and balancing food on our laps. Upstairs there is also an ice cream shop for those that have a sweet tooth!

me and my three kids

The resort also had a nice brunch for Mother’s Day with complimentary mimosas, made-to-order omelettes, a carving station, kid-friendly food, and a dessert table (the part Lucas was most excited about). The staff also gave all the moms flowers which I thought was a sweet gesture. I asked how frequently the resort has brunches and they said they often do for holidays. The next one will be on Father’s Day which would be a nice way to celebrate dad! I know my husband is all about food :)

mini golf at Grizzly Jack's

Other than the water park, my kids enjoyed the arcade which has over 60 fun games. Our family also played miniature golf before we left for home. The 18-hole course was really nice though hard to navigate with a stroller. Next to the mini-golf course there is a great playground which the boys wanted to check out but it was cold and rainy so we skipped it. The resort also has family movie night on Friday and Saturday nights which is a nice way to end the day and get kids ready for bedtime after a busy day of fun.

Overall we had a great weekend at Grizzly Jack’s Grand Bear Resort! If you are in the Chicagoland area and looking for a short staycation to take with your young children you’ll want to check it out! Book your stay here.

Iced Tea Gift Basket For Mom

This shop has been compensated by Collective Bias, Inc. and its advertiser. All opinions are mine alone. #TeaProudly #CollectiveBias

Mother’s Day is coming up and I have the perfect gift for you to give to your mom….time with you! My mom always says she wants time to spend with her daughter and it makes sense. Imagine you spend years with your child relying on you and then all of a sudden they are grown up and out on their own- working, raising kids, and just busy with life in general… you don’t see them as much and when you do it’s typically with the grandkids in tow. We know grandma loves the littles but she probably really misses spending time with you.

So, in brainstorming some ideas for mother-daughter time, I thought about a creative gift idea that is super simple and will show mom just how TEA-rific you think she is. With the weather getting warmer, and my mom liking iced tea, I created an iced tea gift basket. This thoughtful gift, complete with two cups (one for you and one for mom!), shows her that you want to spend an afternoon on the patio listening to her tell stories while the two of you sip iced tea.

(Hover over the image above to shop for Bigelow Tea at Walmart.com!)

I decided to make the gift basket colorful because iced tea reminds me of summer and I wanted my gift basket to reflect that. I added a handtowel, two tumblers, coasters, a fun-shaped ice cube tray and a cute carafe. I also put Bigelow tea packets inside the tumblers. I chose Bigelow Tea (manufactured right here in the U.S.) because it’s my family’s favorite brand of tea. Known for their quality ingredients and foil packaging that keeps the tea fresh, it’s the perfect addition to a gift basket for mom.

When it came to flavors, I picked out fruity flavors of tea since I thought they would fit in well with the sunny day themed basket. Great choices include: Red Raspberry Herbal Tea, I Love Lemon with Vitamin C Herbal Tea, and Green Tea with Pomegranate.

Along with the gift basket you can also brew some iced tea for mom. I made iced tea using the Red Raspberry Herbal Tea and then put it in a “mom” tumbler before we headed outside to enjoy the sunny day.

Making the iced tea was a lot easier than I realized! Here’s the process to make 3 cups of iced tea:

  • Steep 6 tea bags in 8 ounces of hot water for 10 minutes
  • Pour concentrate into pitcher
  • Add 24 ounces of cold water on top of the tea concentrate and stir
  • Pour into glasses and serve.

So give mom the gift she wants most of all and bond over cups of delicious iced tea. Before you leave make sure to remind her that she’s hosting your next mother-daughter get-together and she has all the tools to do so thanks to the sweet gift you gave her!

Mother’s Day Brunch Ideas

Sponsored post written by me on behalf of Tyson® Foods, Inc. All opinions are entirely my own.

Other than being able to sleep in, there’s no better way to start off Mother’s Day than with a delicious brunch (that mom didn’t have to cook) and some coffee. (Please….don’t forget the coffee!) Make this special brunch for your mother or mom-figure in your life, or just send this link to your significant other as a hint ;)

You can even get the kids involved! Older children can help plan the brunch and make the food while younger children can do things like set the table and help put the food in bowls. If there’s extra time, they can even make mom a card or write her a letter to tell her how much they love her.

When thinking about what to make for brunch, keep in mind what your mom’s favorite breakfast foods are, and make sure to plan ahead to get all of the ingredients. Walmart has everything you need for a perfect Mother’s Day celebration, from the food to the flowers.

My favorite breakfast foods are ones that are easy to make and require little time in the kitchen.

Setting out Thomas’® Pre-sliced Plain Bagels and Thomas’ Original Nooks and Crannies English Muffins in a pretty tray and putting out some cream cheese and butter is really simple.

Breakfast casseroles are also perfect for brunches because they can be put together ahead of time. They can be made the night before so they just need to be put in the oven in the morning to cook while your family gets ready for the day. Sinisa and the boys made an Egg, Sausage and Hashbrown Breakfast Casserole and it was delicious!

Ingredients:

  • 1 lb. of Jimmy Dean® Regular Premium Pork Sausage
  • 1 lb. of shredded hash browns
  • 4 eggs
  • 1 cup of shredded cheese
  • Seasoning (to taste)

Directions to make the casserole:

  • Cook sausage on the stovetop until fully cooked and chop into pieces
  • Combine all ingredients in a bowl and put them into a glass loaf pan
  • Bake at 400 degrees for 40 minutes (or until internal temp reaches 165 degrees)

Other things to set out on a brunch table are fresh fruit and something to drink, like milk and juice.

Pretty plates and napkins add some color to the table. Another way to brighten up the brunch table is to add a vase of flowers.

Once the food is ready and the table is set, all that’s left is to eat and celebrate mom!

Make sure to take lots of pictures during your Mother’s Day Brunch and then enter into the Tyson Loves Mom sweepstakes for a chance to win one (1) out of five (5) $200 Walmart gift cards.

How To Plan An Easy Mother’s Day Brunch

Thank you to Tampico for sponsoring this post.

Mother’s Day is coming up so I wanted to share a few tips for planning an easy Mother’s Day brunch for your mom or another special woman in your life. Hoping to enjoy a homemade brunch yourself this year? You could always send this post to your husband, significant other or older child to give them a little nudge ;)

Tip #1: Let her sleep in (and shower when she wakes up.)

Trust me on this one. Letting mom sleep in and have time to shower, before she has to leave her room, will be the perfect start to her day. There is nothing more relaxing than being able to shower  alone and to actually be able to rinse all the shampoo out of our hair before our children are yelling for mommy or knocking at the door. This also gives you time to cook.

Tip #2: Keep the menu simple.

Nobody wants to spend hours in the kitchen preparing a meal so keep the menu simple, making sure to add foods mom likes. Pancakes, crepes or waffles are great choices for a late breakfast. You can use cupcake liners to hold fillings or toppings to make clean up a breeze. One other item I’d add to the menu is a casserole that can be made the night before. About an hour before you are ready to eat you can pop it in the oven which makes things less hectic in the morning. Sinisa makes one with eggs, shredded hashbrowns, breakfast sausage, peppers, mushrooms and cheese that is delicious but you can add in your family’s favorite ingredients.

To drink I’d suggest a sweet, fruity drink like Tampico that’s bright and colorful. For our Mother’s Day themed brunch we chose to try the Citrus Punch flavor. To make your drink even fancier you can add fresh fruit or colorful ice cubes. Personally I also love to add fun straws because I think it makes the drink even more festive.

Tip #3: Personalize the table.

Decorate a table runner with hand prints. Each year have all the kids put a hand print on the table runner to create a special piece that mom loves to see on her table every Mother’s Day!

To make this you need:

  • A table runner (we used a piece of burlap)
  • Paint
  • Paintbrush
  • Paper plate
  • Sharpie marker
Directions for creating the table runner:
  • Put paint on a paper plate
  • Use the paintbrush to paint one of your child’s hands
  • Carefully put their hand on the table runner to make a hand print on the table runner
  • Once dry, write the child’s name and year next to the hand print
  • Every year add each child’s hand print to the table runner

Tip #4: Add flowers.

Flowers make a beautiful centerpiece on any table. You can purchase flowers from the store or farmer’s market or have children pick flowers.

Tip #5: Tell mom how much she means to you.

Use this time while you are eating to tell your mom how much she means to you. You could also have children make her a card, write her a letter or create a poem about her. Chances are she knows that you all love her but there is nothing better than hearing those three little words from the mouths of our children. This simple Mother’s Day card from Jacob (below) means the world to me.

Tip #6: Handle the cleanup.

Once brunch is over make sure to do the dishes and clean up the kitchen. The best meals are ones we don’t have to cleanup :)

What tips do you have for creating a special Mother’s Day brunch?

Motherhood: The Toughest (But Most Rewarding) Job

Thanks to Teleflora for sponsoring this post.

I have held numerous jobs in my thirty two years of life but none of them has been as rewarding, or as difficult, as this one called motherhood. This job, where my bosses pay in hugs and kisses and my job description consists of chauffeur and bedtime story reader, is not as easy as I thought it was going to be when I dreamed about it growing up.

I underestimated the number of times I’d be woken up in the middle of the night, the frustrating meetings I’d have to sit in to advocate for my children’s educational special needs to be met, the amount of dirty diapers I’d change, and the number of sports games I’d sit through where a blanket and winter jacket couldn’t help protect me from the chilling cold. All that aside though, it’s my favorite job I’ve ever been privileged to have.

Teleflora recently came out with a new video that I love called “One Tough Mother”. They realize that motherhood isn’t always hearts and roses but believe that Mother’s Day can be with a bouquet from Teleflora.

Gifting a beautiful flower bouquet is the perfect way to say thank you to moms near and far for all the love, hard work, sacrifice, patience, fun, intelligence, and compassion they bring to their children’s live each and every day. I agree because fresh flowers are one of my favorite gifts to receive for any occasion!

I was sent a Luxurious Lavender Bouquet (available on Teleflora.com for $109.95). Arriving in a sculpted lavender glass vase from a local florist, it was full of dark pink roses, purple carnations and fragrant lilies. It made my home smell amazing and brought a pop of color to the room.

Teleflora has a number of other bouquets you can send the special mom in your life. You can see them all here. Which one is your favorite?

So let the May Buffet begin!

Dale and Thomas Popcorn sent me a Mother’s Day Gift Box of popcorn to review. Embarrassingly, I received it this afternoon and I’ve already devoured a ton of it. This popcorn is delicious!! There were four flavors in the gift box- Chocolate Chunk N’Caramel, Peanut Butter & White Chocolate Drizzlecorn, Hall of Fame Kettle Corn, and White Cheddar & Black Peppercorn. I love sweet popcorn the most so the first one I opened was the Chocolate Chunk N’ Caramel. I liked that they didn’t skimp on the caramel or the chocolate like some brands I’ve had in the past do. Jacob really liked this flavor, too, because he said it tasted like his favorite candy bar. The second one I opened was the Peanut Butter & White Chocolate Drizzle. I wasn’t sure how I would like this one since I am not a huge fan of white chocolate and peanut butter together but after trying it I was hooked. This flavor was amazing! The two flavors went perfectly together and I was left wishing I had more than one bagful of it. I’m looking forward to trying the other two flavors tomorrow, especially the Kettle Corn since that’s the flavor I normally purchase when I buy popcorn. Another feature of this popcorn is that it is Gluten Free and also Kosher.
