Touchable Skin With NIVEA Lotion

When I was a new mom I remember how close I held my children as I rocked them to sleep. I remember putting my finger in their palms and having their little hands close around it. I remember stroking their soft cheeks while I gazed at them, overcome with love for these little humans I had just met.

Touch is important, but not just in infancy. That need for human connection continues throughout our lives. Those hugs that express love. Those pats on the back after a job well done. Walking hand in hand across a street. As humans we all need to feel loved and touch continues to be a main way that this need is fulfilled.

Since I’m not lucky enough to have skin as soft as my children do, I have to rely on lotion to make my hands smooth and touchable. I heard that Sam’s Club had double packs of NIVEA lotion that was specially formulated for very dry skin. I headed to the store with my mom for a little mother-daughter time to wander around Sam’s Club and pick up the lotion. {See my shopping story here}

The 2-pack was perfect for sharing with a loved one. I could use one bottle myself and give one bottle of lotion to my mom.

Upon rubbing the NIVEA lotion into my hands I noticed that it quickly soaked into my skin and made it feel smoother. I think everyone in my family will notice my softer skin. Sinisa will notice it when I put my hand in his and my children will notice it when I rub their backs as they rest on the couch. Everyone benefits when momma has softer skin!

Gluten-Free Chewy Chocolate Macaroons {Recipe}

 

You can’t go wrong with these easy to make, gluten-free macaroons. Yum. Recipe and image courtesy of Terry Walters, author of the best-selling cookbook CLEAN FOOD.

 

INGREDIENTS

  • 2 cups shredded unsweetened coconut
  • 1⁄4 teaspoon sea salt
  • 1⁄4 cup coconut milk
  • 1⁄4 cup maple syrup
  • 1 teaspoon almond extract
  • 1 cup gluten- and dairy-free chocolate chips or 6 ounces dark chocolate

DIRECTIONS

  • Preheat oven to 350°F.
  • In large mixing bowl, combine coconut with salt. In separate bowl, whisk together coconut milk, maple syrup and almond extract. Add to coconut and stir until evenly moist.
  • Melt chocolate chips or chocolate in double boiler or in small pot over very low heat and pour into coconut mixture. Fold until evenly combined. Line cookie sheet with parchment paper. Scoop batter by the tablespoonful and place on cookie sheet in equal-size mounds.
  • Gently press to make each mound of mixture stick together. Bake 18–20 minutes or until tops appear dry. Remove from heat and place on rack to cool.

MAKES 18 macaroons

Shelf Safe Milk: Would You Try It? I Would!

My boys love flavored milk. They would choose it over any other option offered to them, including highly sugared fruit drinks. Their favorite is strawberry but they also like chocolate and Lucas would even choose plain milk over juice. I’m happy with this choice, because I want them to grow up liking milk, but it also comes with some potential problems because of the need for refrigeration.

When I heard about shelf safe milk, which is milk that does not need to stay in the fridge, I wasn’t sure that I’d want to try it. The idea of milk not being refrigerated just grossed me out and I thought that there was no way that could be safe. After learning a little more though I realized how wrong I was about shelf safe milk.

First, it’s been around since the 1960’s so it’s not just some passing fad or idea that someone recently came up with. It’s Ultra pasteurized and in special Tetra Pak eco-friendly cartons. It’s also healthy! There are nutrients in the milk and it’s not filled with additives or preservatives which is great.

I then thought about all of the ways this milk could make life easier for us. Normally running out of milk would be an emergency in our family that would require a late night run to the store. The boys are not happy campers when they wake up and discover there is no milk for them to drink in the morning. We normally try to avoid running out of milk by getting gallons of it at a time. This makes fridge space tight in our home. The shelf safe milk doesn’t have to be refrigerated which would mean that we could store it in the cabinet to ensure we’d always have milk on hand and wouldn’t need to be making anymore late night trips and we’d have more fridge space, too. These would also be great for Lucas to have at school. I send him with juice boxes but I’d love to give him an alternative at school.

So after learning more and thinking about all of the benefits to shelf safe milk I think I’m going to get some to keep in the cabinet. Want to try it yourself? Quick & Delicious Meals With Lean Cuisine

Remember how I told you a couple weeks back that I was getting fit with Lean Cuisine and the Couch-To-5K program? Well I’m back with an update! It’s been fun and most of all easy to make healthy choices with this program.

First, lets start with the one thing I typically despise- exercise! Following the Couch-To-5K program started me off slow which is the way I need to start. Check out the first day:

I hate running. Hate it. But running for 60 seconds? Yeah I can do that! Here’s me after one of my workouts {please don’t mind my post-workout look}:

I also had fun on one of the days working out on the soccer field at the parents vs. kids game on Jacob’s last day of soccer. These are the kind of workouts I like because it doesn’t feel like exercise {but those parents that have ever played a sport with a young child know you do a lot of running to get stray balls!}

I enjoyed the food I ate during the past couple weeks as well. Thought I was eating healthy meals with low calories I didn’t feel like I was on a “diet”. I’ve been really busy so some meals I ended up eating at my computer.

Some Lean Cuisine meals I ate with a side dish. I chose fresh vegetables for most of my sides.

With the addition of these sides I was full afterwards which was a great feeling since I’ve found I tend to be hungry after eating other frozen meals.

Out of the three flavors I ate in the past couple weeks, my favorite Lean Cuisine frozen meal was the Sesame Chicken. With these meals there is no reason for me to skip lunch or dinner anymore. In less than 5 minutes I can create a healthy, delicious meal for myself.

Tammilee, my blogging partner in this challenge, enjoyed this challenge as well. I love the tip she gave for making sure workouts stay on her mind by putting her shoes right next to the couch so she sees them everyday. That’s a tip I’m going to steal! {You can read about her journey in today’s update post.}

Kids LiveWell Program

A couple weeks ago I was invited to attend a blogger dinner hosted by the National Restaurant Association. We enjoyed delicious food at Fulton’s On The River while we learned more about the Kids LiveWell program. I had never heard of it before so I was excited to find out more since any program that benefits children is of interest to me.

According to the website, “The National Restaurant Association launched the Kids LiveWell program in collaboration with Healthy Dining to help parents and children select healthful menu options when dining out. Restaurants that participate in the voluntary program commit to offering healthful meal items for children, with a particular focus on increasing consumption of fruit and vegetables, lean protein, whole grains and low-fat dairy, and limiting unhealthy fats, sugars and sodium.”

As a parent I really liked this program. It is so hard to find healthy options when dining out and more so than just healthy, they have to taste good or my kids won’t eat them. Over 25,000 restaurant locations across the United States have stepped up and taken the challenge to provide healthy options for kids so that parents can feel good about their choice to eat out. To enroll in the program, restaurants need to follow a number of steps including having side or entree options that meet the specific nutritional guidelines outlined below.

Some of our favorite restaurants are participating including Applebee’s, Chic-fil-A, Chilis, Cracker Barrell, and IHOP. You can view all of the restaurants that are part of the program here. Don’t see your favorite restaurant on the list? Talk to the owner and let them know about this program and how they can participate.

To find out more about the Kids LiveWell program you can visit the National Restaurant Association’s website here. There is also a Kids LiveWell application for iPhone and Android phones that makes finding a participating restaurant easy to do when you are on the go. You can also view a listing of their healthy options before you arrive at the restaurant.

Breakfast: Thinking Inside And Outside The Box

It’s easy to see how breakfast has come to qualify as one of the nutritional challenges of parenthood. Whether it’s your own parental time constraints or your child’s busy schedule, getting the whole family ready to set off to child care and/or school in the morning, play dates, or any of a whole host of other common early-in-the-day commitments, breakfast is often neglected. If the words “slow” and “leisurely” don’t exactly describe your morning routine, we’d like to suggest that you commit a little extra time and effort to protecting the nutritional integrity of your child’s morning meal. Whether you opt for a simple breakfast or a more elaborate one, any effort to make it nutritious is better than no breakfast at all. Whether that means a glass of low-fat milk and a piece of wheat toast or an all-out feast, the following breakfast-made-easier tips will hopefully help you rise to the occasion and overcome some of the most common barriers to a healthy breakfast.

Schedule Accordingly. While we’d like to remind you that sitting down and sharing family meals is beneficial, we’re willing to bet that sitting down to a leisurely breakfast with your kids each morning simply isn’t realistic for most of you (or us, for that matter). What is realistic, however, is making sure you carve out enough time to allow your child to eat without pressure. Especially for infants and toddlers, this includes factoring in enough time in the morning’s schedule to allow for both assisted- and self-feeding.

Fix Breakfast Before Bedtime.In other words, plan ahead. As with just about all other aspects of feeding your child, a little advance planning can go a long way toward having a wider range of healthy foodson hand. Simple examples such as hard-boiling eggs ahead of time orhaving your child’s favorite cold cereal dished out the night before to pair with some presliced fresh fruit can mean the difference between time for a balanced breakfast and running out the door without it (or, as is often the case, with some commercially packaged and far less nutritious alternative in hand).

Grab-and-Go Breakfasts. If the reality of your schedule is such that you and your kids routinely run out the door with no time to spare in the morning, then try stocking up on a variety of nutritious foods that you can pre-prepare and prepackage for healthier grab-and-go convenience. In addition to hard-boiled eggs, consider other fast favorites like sliced apples, homemade muffins, or a bagel with low-fat cream cheese.

Make Sure Sleep Is on the Menu. Applying the age-old adage, make sure your child is early enough to bed that she rises early enough to allow time for breakfast. No matter what their age, tired kids tend to be cranky, and cranky kids are far less likely to sit down for a well-balanced breakfast. Not only that, but sleep has proven itself to be a crucial ingredient in children’s overall health.


Broaden Your Horizons. You’ll certainly want to keep safety in mind when figuring out what’s age-appropriate to offer your child for breakfast, but don’t let yourself be constrained by artificially imposed labels to determine what is good to serve for a morning meal. Think protein, think fruits and vegetables, and think outside the box when it comes to expanding your breakfast horizons beyond just breakfast cereals and milk.

Look for Child Care and School Support. Be sure to check out what breakfast options your child’s school or child care provider offers. With much-deserved attention now being paid to the food our children eat in out-of-home settings, you’re more likely to find balanced breakfast options on the menu, and your child may well be more receptive to eating them if all of his friends are eating alongside him.

Together Counts- Encouraging Families To Get Outside

Our family loves to spend time outside together. One of our favorite things to do at the end of the day is to go on family walks. This is a nice chance to talk about our day while we get exercise. In the Fall we like to go on nature hunts and look for leaves, twigs, and other items for collages. In the Spring, we like to watch as the world blooms around us. In past years we have pushed the boys in a stroller or pulled them in a wagon but this year I’m excited because they are older so they can walk beside us. We also like staying active together by playing t-ball and soccer in the backyard. If it’s hot out we enjoy running through the sprinkler and do anything else water related.

National Weigh-In Day {And The Special K Challenge}

Today, January 2nd, is National Weigh-In Day, a day created for women to talk about weight loss. Most of the time I  tend to focus on the numbers on the scale and the amount of pounds I want to lose. In 2010 I said my goal was to lose 50 pounds. It didn’t happen and I think it’s because I was so focused on the scale that I didn’t think about anything else.

According to a survey, 62% of women focus on the number of pounds they hope to lose which often derails them from their weight loss plan. The Special K brand wants to make stepping on the scale fun for women. Rather than focusing on the numbers that appear, they want women to imagine what they will gain emotionally when they will lose weight.

I love this idea of focusing on how I will feel and what I will gain instead of focusing on the numbers and getting upset if I don’t see a huge difference in scale numbers from week to week. I have decided that my health goal will not focus on a certain amount of weight loss but will instead focus on myself.

My “weight goal” for 2012 is to feel good in the clothes I wear. Right now I think I look fat in whatever I put on and I hate that feeling. To get to a point where I feel comfortable in what I wear I will be choosing healthier snacks, cutting down on the calories I drink {pop and coffee drinks}, and exercising more {with the kids}.

For the food goal I will be kick starting the year with the Special K Challenge. I was sent a big box full of snacks and got some meal planning ideas from their website. I’m excited to start this two week challenge and hope that you will join me in focusing on the positive outcomes you want instead of the numbers you see on the scale.

Gluten-Free Crunchmaster Multi-Grain Crackers {Review and Giveaway}

We are not a gluten free household but with all the talk I’ve been hearing lately about how helpful gluten free diets are to children with special needs we might be headed in that direction. I was excited to try my first product that’s labeled gluten free when I sampled Crunchmaster Multi-Grain Crackers. I was sent a case to try out which included three flavors. I wasn’t sure what to expect because I’m used to eating buttery tasting crackers and I was worried these might be horrible but I think for a gluten free product they tasted pretty good. I liked that they were flavored and enjoyed the white cheddar variety the most. They were crunchy and I really like that they are good for me since they are 100% whole grain and low in fat. I think they are a great option for people that are on gluten free diets and can’t have other cracker products.
