Tips On Taking Your Child For Their First Eye Exam

Thanks to Visionworks for sponsoring this post.

Did you know that 1 in 4 children have vision problems? Poor vision interferes with a child’s ability to learn so, with school starting for many this coming week (and already started for some), now is the perfect time to take your child for an eye exam.

The whole process of eye exams might seem scary to some kids but I’ve found some simple ways to make the process run smoothly. The first step is deciding where to go and finding a place that is child friendly. We headed to our local Visionworks and I could not be happier with the decision. From kind staff to a great selection of kid’s frames to a partnership with PAW Patrol, Visionworks welcomed my active boys and made Luke’s first eye exam experience great.

The next thing you’ll want to do is talk to your child about what to expect and show them some pictures of eye doctor’s offices. The large machines in the office can be intimidating but once they know what they are for and what they do they aren’t so scary anymore!

Once the eye exam is done you can browse the kid’s frames and see which ones your child likes. Visionworks carries the largest selection of  kids’ frames at every day low prices. Kids’ eyewear has improved so much since we were children and become much more durable with the development of polycarbonate impact-resistant lenses and flexible frames. There are a lot more cute designs now as well! Letting your child pick out a pair of glasses that they love is important because you want them to feel confident wearing their glasses.

Visionworks is passionate about offering its youngest customers a positive and fun experience at the eye doctor and their partnership with PAW Patrol shows kids that coming in for a back-to- school eye exam isn’t scary at all. Not only do they carry an exclusive line of PAW Patrol frames designed just for this back to school season but, for a limited time, children who have completed their annual eye exam will receive a goodie bag, which will include a themed activity sheet, a box of crayons, a sticker sheet and a PAW Patrol character mask.

(Don’t you just love the little paw print on the side of the frames?!)

In the end, we discovered that Lucas did not need glasses but I’m still so glad that we went so we could rule out vision as a cause of some of his learning struggles. Need to take your child for their annual back to school eye exam still? Find your local Visionworks here and schedule your appointment online to make things easy.

I’d love to hear how you prepare your child for new experiences, like heading to the eye doctor, so please leave me a comment below and let me know!

  2. OH my goodness, I remember my first eye exam when I had to have glasses as a tot and my son’s first eye exam when he didn’t. I was so relieved that his eyes had perfect vision. This is great information for parents and I’m going to send it to my sister, she was just talking about taking her grandchild for his first exam.

  3. Good points. I just wish I was prepared like this for my exams when I was younger. This just seems to make eye exams less stressful. Thanks for sharing.
